My Story
I would have to say my turning point in my life would be when my dad got diagnosed with cancer. I was in the 8th grade and was constantly worried. He had to go into the hospital for long periods of time for chemo and stayed at the hospital, but visiting wasn’t enough. My mom talked to him everyday to find out what was going on. It got harder each day for me because I was so used to seeing him everyday and having him pick me up from school and talking about what went on. Later on we found out he was in remission and we were so happy. My father has gone through remission twice already and the cancer has come back. My father has non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer. It’s a turning point everyday because I don’t know if I will see him the next day or not if he is in the hospital. One time when he was in the hospital my mom was with him and I was at work. She called me and says that your dad almost died. He had a heart attack and was at a great risk because of his cancer. I was in tears; the thought of losing my dad at such a young age was so hard. The only people I had to cry to was my mom, brother and boyfriend. I think back on that day and remember thinking what am I going to do, how is my mom going to support us etc. My dad is always there for me and will always be my hero for fighting in the Vietnam War and fighting against cancer. It doesn’t help to have two parents who have gone through cancer and one who still is. I think everyday that I am very lucky to have my mom and dad and that they both fought for their lives. Its definitely life changing when you think about one of your parents going through cancer and panicking about if you might not see him the next day . I love my father and him fighting has shown me to fight for my live no matter what is going on.
